Beautiful Bea Arthur

Editorial

Some people have a time with talented women who aren’t stereotypically “easy on the eyes.” Witness the recent global meltdown over the realization that a woman with prominent eyebrows, an unstylish ‘do and a sturdy body could actually — yes! — sing like an angel.

Maybe that explains why, when the great comedic actress Beatrice Arthur passed away earlier this week, The New York Times — another “grey lady,” incidentally — ran this inelegant headline: “Bea Arthur, TV Battle-Ax, Dies at 86.” We would note that when Carroll O’Connor died several years earlier, the same pub did not use a headline to call him a “TV Bellowing Bigot,” but that would take us away from our point, which is to praise the body of work Ms. Arthur left behind for those of us in TV Land.

In “Maude,” she was a liberated woman trapped in the older traditions of a changing world. She was a housewife-plus a brash political junkie and pontificator but ultimately a pussycat.

Her softer side made loud and proud “Maude” palatable. She wore her white liberal guilt like one of her extravagant tunics, the flip side of Cousin Archie’s buttoned-up conservatism. When John Wayne came to visit, everyone expected a showdown; instead, she melted and said, “What the hell, let’s dance.”

Ms. Arthur rang the TV legend bell a second time with her portrayal of Dorothy Zbornak in “The Golden Girls.” Smart, sassy and again vulnerable, Ms. Arthur scored in a role that showed post-menopausal women in fine fashion and even finer fettle — no matter that she had . . . More . . .

Playwright Lynn Nottage Wins Pulitzer Prize!

Congratulations to Pulitzer Prize Winning Playwright Lynn Nottage!!

****

Lynn Nottage, Pulitzer Prize Winning PlaywrightBrooklyn Writer Lynn Nottage Wins Pulitzer

Joe Dziemianowica, The New York Daily News

Pulitzer pride grows in Brooklyn.

Lynn Nottage’s play “Ruined,” a haunting story of African women scarred by the brutal civil war in the Congo, has won the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

“I’m orbiting the Earth,” said the delighted writer, who was at home in Boerum Hill when she learned Monday afternoon that she had won.

“I hope it will raise awareness about the issues that the play raises. The war ended in 2002, but the conflict and violence against women continues.”

The title of the play refers to a woman’s condition after she is raped and genitally mutilated.

Nottage, who had been considered the front-runner for the coveted prize, has often celebrated African-American New York women in her works, including a turn-of-the-century seamstress in “Intimate Apparel” and a riches-to-rags public relations executive in “Fabulation.”

“I went further afield with ‘Ruined,’” Nottage said. “I went in search of my African sisters. When I wrote it, I felt a greater sense of urgency simply because I feel the conflict is still raging, but interest is fading.”

Inspired by Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage and Her Children,” Nottage’s drama is set in a Congolese brothel. It tells the story of the watering hole’s wily and charismatic proprietor, Mama Nadi, and several young women who work for her who have been brutalized in the conflict.

Despite the grim subject matter, Nottage’s play is filled with humor, music and hope. More . . .

Hanging Out with Susan Boyle! The UK Singer That Made Simon Cowell Smile

Today we celebrate the power of faith and the beauty of Susan Boyle – The UK Singer whose audition on “Britain’s Got Talent” made Simon Cowell smile.

The Beauty of Susan Boyle: The UK Internet Singing Sensation

Okay, you’ve seen the video (click here if you haven’t) of Susan Boyle, the woman auditioning for “Britain’s Got Talent” who surprised Simon Cowell, the other judges, the audience and the world with her singing.

But what is it that has moved her video to be viewed over 30, 000,000 times on YouTube? What is it that moves people to tears?

Is it her singing? Naahh, we’ve heard great voices before.

What we love about her is her having the “temerity” to continue to pursue a dream at the age of 47.  The “audacity” to believe that she had a chance; and the “gall” to actually show up at the audition.

As Peggy Noonan, a columnist from The Wall Street Journal said on “ABC This Week with George Stephanopoulus”, ”She was lovely, she was modest, awkard  . . . humble . . . she opened her mouth and she was transformed . . . and it was very tender.”

In addition, she also serves as a reminder that you can’t always judge a book by it’s cover and that it’s the pages of the book that tell the full story.

Kudos to you Susan for holding onto your dreams and in turn inspiring millions!! We’ll be rooting for you on May 23rd!

Congrats J.K. Rowlings! Harry Potter Series Set to Be # 1 Film Series of All-Time/***See Official Trailer for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Looks like its time to cue up the Congratulations for J. K. Rowlings!!

The Harry Potter Series is on deck to be the # 1 film series of all-time beating “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings”! And with the summer launch of ”Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”, we know it’s only a matter of time before her films surpass that milestone! Read below for detail (and to find out which series is currently #1) and also check below to see the Official Trailer for the new Harry Potter movie!

Stacking up the “Harry Potter” Film Series

Matt McDaniel, Yahoo! Movies

The novels of J.K. Rowling were already a global sensation when the movie adaptation of “Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone” hit screens in late 2001. Then the enormous success of the film franchise has turned her magical world into a full-fledged institution. Collectively, the five movies so far are the second most successful series worldwide in cinema history, beating “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings.” Only James Bond has earned more money (just over $5 billion, not adjusted for inflation), and with the upcoming release of “Half-Blood Prince,” Harry Potter ($4.5 billion) is sure to jump ahead into the top slot.

Let’s not forget, though, that the Harry Potter films aren’t just commercial successes. Every film has scored a “B” grade or higher with the critics on Yahoo! Movies along with a “Certified Fresh” rating from RottenTomatoes.com. Plus, the series has racked up six Academy Award nominations. Here is a breakdown of how each of the five movies performed at the box office, and how they were rated by both critics and fans. And we have a first look at new character banners and the latest theatrical trailer for movie number six, “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.”

“Slumdog Millionarie” Child Star Rubina Ali for Sale by Her Father?

Rubina Ali – We loved her in the movie. We thought she was gorgeous in her Oscar dress. We smiled at the pictures of her at Disneyland and now we hear reports that her father is allegedly offering her for sale. . .

Her father says he isn’t.

Read below for both sides of the story.

News of the World Article: "Slumdog Millionaire" Star, Rubina Ali, for Sale

From News of The World.

Father Tries to Cash In on Daughter’s Fame

The poverty-stricken father of Slumdog Millionaire child star Rubina Ali plans to become a millionaire himself – by SELLING his nine-yearold daughter.

In a bid to escape India’s real-life slums, Rafiq Qureshi put angel-faced darling of the Oscars Rubina up for adoption, demanding millions of rupees worth £200,000.

As he offered the shocking deal to the News of the World’s undercover fake sheik this week, Rafiq declared: “I have to consider what’s best for me, my family and Rubina’s future.”

Rafiq tried to blame Hollywood bosses for forcing him to put his daughter up for SALE.

As he tried to fix the illegal adoption deal, real-life slum dweller Rafiq declared: “We’ve got nothing out of this film.”

Then, almost embarrassed to speak it out loud, he whispered to an accomplice the price tag he has put on his innocent young daughter: “It’s £200,000!”

That was an astonishing FOURFOLD increase on his opening demand. But Rafiq’s equally demanding brother Mohiuddin insisted: “The child is special now. This is NOT an ordinary child. This is an Oscar child!”  More . . .

The Times Online: Rubina Ali's Family Brawl After Father Denies Offering Slumdog Actress For SaleRubina Ali’s Family Brawl After Father Denies Offering “Slumdog Millionaire” Actress For Sale

Rhys Blakely, Mumbai, Times Online (UK)

There were ugly scenes outside the home of one of the child stars of Slumdog Millionaire today when Rubina Ali’s mother demanded that the young actress be removed from the care of her father.

Rafiq Asghar Ali Qureshi is alleged to have offered the nine-year-old for sale for £200,000 in an illegal adoption deal.

“We are considering Rubina’s future,” he is claimed to have told an undercover newspaper reporter from the News of the World, who was posing as an interested buyer from the Middle East.

“We’ve got nothing out of this film. They haven’t looked after us. They gave some money at the start but they gave nothing afterwards. They gave us around 150,000 rupees (£2,000).

“They’ve been talking about giving us a house, but all they do is talk.”

Mr Qureshi and his brother-in-law Rajan More allegedly initially asked for £50,000 for Rubina – a sum that was hiked to £200,000 at a later meeting.

Ghostwriters on Twitter? Yep! Just Ask Britney, Kanye, 50 Cent, Ron Paul, . . .

It looks like some people hire ghostwriters to handle their Twittering . . . Interesting . . .Now let’s think about this . . . It is only 140 characters . . . and the nature of Twitter is that individuals are telling you about their personal activities . . . but maybe for business reasons and because of time constraints they need people to . . . Hmmm. Am not sure how we feel about this . . . For some reason, the word “inauthentic” comes to mind. >:) What do you think?

****

Twitter When Stars Twitter, a Ghost May Be Lurking

Noam Cohen, The New York Times

The rapper 50 Cent is among the legion of stars who have recently embraced Twitter to reach fans who crave near-continuous access to their lives and thoughts. On March 1, he shared this insight with the more than 200,000 people who follow him: “My ambition leads me through a tunnel that never ends.”

Those were 50 Cent’s words, but it was not exactly him tweeting. Rather, it was Chris Romero, known as Broadway, the director of the rapper’s Web empire, who typed in those words after reading them in an interview.

“He doesn’t actually use Twitter,” Mr. Romero said of 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson III, “but the energy of it is all him.”

TwitterIn its short history, Twitter — a microblogging tool that uses 140 characters in bursts of text — has become an important marketing tool for celebrities, politicians and businesses, promising a level of intimacy never before approached online, as well as giving the public the ability to speak directly to people and institutions once comfortably on a pedestal.

But someone has to do all that writing, even if each entry is barely a sentence long. In many cases, celebrities and their handlers have turned to outside writers — ghost Twitterers, if you will — who keep fans updated on the latest twists and turns, often in the star’s own voice.

Because Twitter is seen as an intimate link between celebrities and their fans, many performers are not willing to divulge the help they use to put their thoughts into cyberspace.

TwitterBritney Spears recently advertised for someone to help, among other things, create content for Twitter and Facebook. Kanye West recently told New York magazine that he has hired two people to update his blog. “It’s just like how a designer would work,” he said.

It is not only celebrities who are forced to look to a team to produce real-time commentary on daily activities; politicians like Ron Paul have assigned staff members to create Twitter posts and Facebook personas. Candidate Barack Obama, as well as President Obama, has a social-networking team to keep his Twitter feed tweeting.

The famous, of course, have turned to ghostwriters for autobiographies and other acts of self-aggrandizement. But the idea of having someone else write continual updates of one’s daily life seems slightly absurd.

The basketball star Shaquille O’Neal, for example, is a prolific Twitterer on his account — The Real Shaq — where he shares personal news, jokes and occasional trash talking about opponents with nearly 430,000 followers.

“If I am going to speak, it will come from me,” he said, adding that the technology allows him to bypass the media to speak directly to the fans.

As for the temptation to rely on a team to supply his words, he said: “It’s 140 characters. It’s so few characters. If you need a ghostwriter for that, I feel sorry for you.” More . . .
